First 3.5 GHz Mobile WiMAXTM products tested in AT4 wireless facilities received WiMAX Forum CertifiedTM Seal of Approval

Malaga, Spain, 26 March 2009 — AT4 wireless, the WiMAX Forum® Technology Competence Center and first worldwide WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Laboratory (WFDCL), announced today new 3.5 GHz mobile products tested in its facilities that received the WiMAX Forum Certified™ Seal of Approval.

Two new base stations obtained the WiMAX Forum Certified™ Logo. The 3.5 GHz frequency band products which achieved WiMAX™ certification belong to WiMAX Forum member companies Alcatel-Lucent and Alvarion.

The Alcatel-Lucent “zero footprint” 9710 Compact Base Station is supporting Beam forming and MIMO features. It has been deployed in twenty-one 3.5GHz networks worldwide and has been in commercial service since 2007.

“The rigorous testing program we’ve carried out with AT4 wireless leading to WiMAX Forum® certification adds an official stamp of validation to our Rev-e infrastructure, the most widely deployed in 3.5GHz worldwide,” said Paul Larbey, head of Next-Generation Mobile Access activities for Alcatel-Lucent. “Our own Open Device Program provides assurances of interoperability with numerous devices, but certification from a respected industry authority brings the ultimate guarantee.”

Alvarion’s BreezeMAX® platform is a fourth generation OFDM radio access network that provides state of the art 4G functionality in one of the industry’s most deployed WiMAX platform with over 250 commercial deployments in service around the globe. BreezeMAX is built with IP and OFDM innovation that spans over 12 years of development experience and provides a carrier class stable platform that allows rapid development of new features. BreezeMAX includes unique algorithms to enable dynamic rate adaptation, MIMO A and B switching, fast mobility and comprehensive distributed and centralized ASN gateways. The BreezeMAX offers a scalable and high capacity solution in a compact package to support a variety of network configurations needed during the network’s growth. A cost effective and interoperable platform, BreezeMAX provides the operators an optimized business case by offering an industry best total cost of ownership.

Products achieving Mobile WiMAX™ certification were tested for mobility functionality through stringent testing including radio and protocol conformance testing and interoperability amongst different equipment vendors. The accomplishment of being designated as WiMAX Forum Certified ensures interoperability of WiMAX products.

With these new WiMAX certifications, AT4 wireless demonstrates its continuous support to the WiMAX Certification Program. “This is an important milestone for WiMAX Certification. Nowadays, 3.5 GHz frequency band worldwide regulation, traditionally oriented for fixed wireless access service, is promptly moving to mobility support, so new devices certified in this frequency band is a good news for the whole WiMAX ecosystem”, said Jose de la Plaza, Telecommunications Laboratory Manager at AT4 wireless.

Motorola Receives WiMAX Forum(R) Certification for Three 2.5GHz Products

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., April 27, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that it has received the WiMAX Forum Certified(TM) seal of approval for two of its customer premises equipment devices (CPE) and one WiMAX(TM) access point. With this recognition, Motorola's 2.5GHz CPEi 25150 (data only), its award-winning CPEi 25750 (data and Voice over IP), and its WiMAX Access Point (WAP) 25600 solution join Motorola's portfolio of WiMAX Forum Certified products. Motorola's WAP 25400 was certified in June 2008.

WiMAX Forum certification is granted after products pass required interoperability and conformance tests as outlined by the WiMAX Forum. Through its certification program the WiMAX Forum provides operators with the assurance the products that have passed rigorous testing will have the ability to interoperate with other vendors' WiMAX access points and devices that have passed the same certification process. This is an important step by the WiMAX Forum toward enhancing the ecosystem and advancing the widespread adoption of the WiMAX 802.16e standard around the world.

"Through our certification program the WiMAX Forum fosters an ecosystem of standards-based, interoperable solutions that meet exacting standards for interoperability and help drive economies of scale," said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum. "The recent certification of three more Motorola products enhances their portfolio and provides more choices for operators as they deploy wireless broadband services."
"Attaining WiMAX Forum certification on these products is an important milestone that validates the maturity and marketability of our WiMAX solutions," said Darren McQueen, vice president, Wireless Broadband Access Technologies, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. "Motorola is a global market leader in delivering and deploying 802.16e WiMAX networks and devices having shipped more than 6,600 3-sector and 4-sector access points and more than 360,000 CPEs and USB broadband modems at the end of 2008. Our end-to-end WiMAX solution extends beyond just the infrastructure to the IP core, operations and maintenance, a full services portfolio, and CPEs, including these three recently-certified products."

Motorola's CPEi 150 and CPEi 750 are desktop products that connect to a WiMAX network to deliver high-speed broadband access to users in their homes or offices. In addition to data access, the CPEi 750 has an integral two-port ATA that also enables Voice over IP. Both units have high gain antennas to offer best possible signal strength and highly sensitive receivers that exceed the WiMAX Forum's specified receive sensitivity requirements across all modulation schemes.

These WiMAX Forum Certified solutions employ multiple antenna technology that delivers increased range and higher throughput when compared to products with single antenna solutions. When used with Motorola's dual-antenna, Diversity Access Point /WAP series, both uplink and downlink performance are significantly enhanced by advanced signal processing techniques. CPE device performance is a factor of antenna gain, directivity, orientation and diversity as well as transmitter power and receiver sensitivity. Use of the Motorola WiMAX CPEi 750 can reduce the number of access points required in order to provide service.

Motorola's WAP 600 Access Point is part of Motorola's WiMAX Flexible Access Point infrastructure portfolio and is widely deployed with customers around the world. It is a ground based WiMAX access point solution that offers higher power for extended coverage over large areas. The WAP 600 features enhanced Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) radio frequency capabilities and a flexible design. It is based on IEEE 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standards, and built with dual path TX/RX diversity antenna techniques and integrated RF and base band modules. It includes a spectrally efficient S-OFDMA interface, low latency performance, and is designed to work in a WiMAX distributed network architecture. Enhanced system gain, supported by MIMO capabilities, allows deep indoor penetration and cellular-like, mobility applications.

The WAP 600 provides Non-Line-of-Sight, fixed and mobile wireless broadband connections. Paired with a common IP core, this access point, with diversity antenna techniques, will support seamless inter-technology handovers. The IP end-to-end design of the WAP 600 with the Motorola wi4 WiMAX distributed network architecture eliminates high-cost centralized boxes, simplifies management, and reduces core transport costs. Connectivity to standard IP equipment allows operators to realize significant cost advantages.

The two recently-certified Motorola WiMAX CPEs are among the products on display at the Motorola booth at the WiMAX Forum Congress Asia 2009 in Singapore Apr. 28 and 29. Visit our microsite for more information about Motorola's presence and speakers at that event.
